How do they get the bones?

Bones can come from three main sources:

  • Same Individual (Autograft): Sometimes surgeons use a piece of the bone of the same individual who needs it for the transplant. This is pretty common because the body is less likely to reject it.

  • A Donor (Allograft): Most often, the bone comes from a deceased person who generously donated their tissues.

  • An Animal (Xenograft): In very rare cases, bones from animals like pigs might be used. This is still being researched for some procedures.
