How Does COPD Affect the Lungs?

In healthy lungs, air moves through branching airways to tiny air sacs called alveoli, which are stretchy and help with breathing. With COPD:

  • Airways and air sacs lose their elasticity.
  • Walls of air sacs break down.
  • Airways become thick, inflamed, and clogged with excess mucus.
  • This makes it harder to breathe in and out.
