During a skin biopsy, the area to be sampled is first cleaned and numbed with a local anesthetic. Then, depending on the type of biopsy, a small tool such as a punch, blade, or scalpel is used to remove a sample of skin tissue. The sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis.
