The treatment of bursitis depends on whether or not it involves infection.

  • Aseptic Bursitis - This inflammation results from local soft tissue trauma or strain injury. In this condition, bursa is not infected. The treatment options available are,
  • RICE stands for rice, ice, compression, elevation
  • Anti-inflammatory and pain medicines
  • Injection of steroid into the affected area
  • Splints or braces
  • Septic Bursitis - Bursa becomes infected with bacteria. This causes pain and swelling. Treatment includes antibiotics, repeated aspiration of the infected fluid, and surgical drainage and removal of the infected bursa.
