How Is Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) Diagnosed?

CLL is often diagnosed through routine blood tests that show an elevated number of white blood cells. Further diagnostic tests may include:

  • Blood Smear: Examining a sample of blood under a microscope.
  • Flow Cytometry: Analyzing blood or bone marrow cells to identify specific markers on the surface of lymphocytes.
  • Bone Marrow Biopsy: Taking a sample of bone marrow to examine the types and numbers of cells present.
  • Immunophenotyping: Determining the types of proteins present on the surface of cells.
  • Genetic Tests: Identifying specific genetic abnormalities associated with CLL.
