Doctors diagnose COPD by looking at your symptoms, medical and family history, and test results. They’ll ask about smoking, exposure to secondhand smoke, air pollution, or chemicals. Be sure to mention if you have ongoing shortness of breath, a persistent cough with mucus, or a family history of COPD. Your doctor will also listen to your lungs with a stethoscope for any abnormal sounds.
