Treatment includes,
- Phlebotomy which removes blood from the body. This is done first until iron levels return to normal. This can be done once or twice a year as needed.
- Chelation therapy which involves using medicine to remove iron from the body.
- Do not take iron and vitamin C supplements since vitamin C can increase iron absorption.
- Not drinking excess alcohol.
If iron levels return back to normal state before having any organ damage, then that person can lead a normal life with this disorder.
