What Are Myeloproliferative Disorders?

Myeloproliferative disorders (MPDs) are a group of diseases characterized by the overproduction of blood cells by the bone marrow. These disorders can affect red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Common types of MPDs include polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia, and primary myelofibrosis. They are caused by mutations in blood stem cells, which lead to uncontrolled cell proliferation.
