Doing chemical peels can cause serious side effects, such as,
- Redness of the Treated Skin - Normal healing from a chemical peel can cause redness of the treated skin. Post medium or deep chemical peel, redness can last for a few months.
- Scarring - Doing chemical peels can cause scarring rarely on the lower part of the face. Antibiotics and steroids medications can help in softening the appearance of these scars.
- Changes in Skin Color - A chemical peel can make the treated skin become darker than normal or lighter than normal.
- Infection - Doing a chemical peel can also result in having bacterial or fungal or viral infection.
- Heart or Kidney or Liver Damage - A deep chemical peel uses carbolic acid (phenol) which can damage heart muscle and causes the heart to beat irregularly. Phenol can also harm kidneys and liver.
