What Are the Signs of Pneumonia in Older People?

Pneumonia in older adults might not always show the typical signs like a fever or a cough with phlegm. Instead, you might notice other symptoms such as diarrhea or worsening confusion. Some key signs to watch for include:

  • Increasing confusion, apathy, or temporary unconsciousness.
  • Shortness of breath or rapid breathing (more than 30 breaths per minute).
  • A fast heartbeat (over 120 beats per minute).
  • Low blood pressure (systolic below 90 mmHg or diastolic below 60 mmHg).
  • High fever (104°F or higher) or very low temperature (95°F or lower).
  • Older adults with chronic conditions like COPD, heart failure, or diabetes should get medical attention right away if they show any signs of pneumonia.
