The first sign of sudden cardiac arrest is loss of consciousness. This usually happens when the heart stops beating. Some people may have a racing heartbeat or dizziness or lightheadedness just before fainting. Sometimes, the affected person may have chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea or vomiting before an hour of having SCA.
