The main symptoms of Usher syndrome are deafness or hearing loss and retinitis pigmentosa. Different types of usher syndrome show other symptoms. But everyone with Usher syndrome develops retinitis pigmentosa (RP). It causes the cells to break down in the retina causing loss of night vision and peripheral vision. As retinitis pigmentosa (RP) progresses, the field of vision narrows until having central vision. The signs of retinitis pigmentosa shown in children are trouble moving around dark, taking longer to adjust to lighting changes, and tripping over the objects in their path. In adults, retinitis pigmentosa (RP) can cause difficulty in daily tasks like walking, driving and reading.
