What Are the Types of Osteogenesis Imperfecta?

The most common types of osteogenesis imperfecta are

  • Type 1 - This is the most common and mildest type of brittle bone disease. The collagen production is normal but bones break more easily and are shaped normally.
  • Type 2 - This is the most severe type. Collagen production is not normal. Babies with type II are born with many fractures, are very small and have severe breathing problems. Most babies do not survive.
  • Type 3 - In this type, collagen does not form normally, and babies often have broken bones at birth. As kids get older, bones break easily, and remain shorter than other kids of their age. They may also have abnormally shaped bones, breathing problems, hearing loss, brittle teeth and other problems.
  • Type 4 - Collagen does not form normally. Kids usually have frequent bone breaks and abnormally shaped bones. They are shorter than other kids of their age and have hearing loss on becoming adults.
