GBS is believed to be triggered by an abnormal immune response to a prior infection, such as Campylobacter jejuni (a bacterial infection), the flu, or other viral illnesses. The immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own nerves, particularly the myelin sheath that protects nerve fibers.
