NMOSD is an autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues, particularly targeting a protein called aquaporin-4. The exact reason why this happens is unknown. In some cases, antibodies against another protein, Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG), are involved.
