What Causes Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma?

The exact cause of NHL is not known, but several risk factors can increase the likelihood of developing the disease:

  • Age: The risk increases with age, particularly in individuals over 60.
  • Weakened Immune System: People with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS, autoimmune diseases, or organ transplant recipients taking immunosuppressive drugs, are at higher risk.
  • Infections: Certain infections, such as Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), human T-cell leukemia/lymphoma virus (HTLV-1), and Helicobacter pylori, are associated with an increased risk of NHL.
  • Exposure to Chemicals: Exposure to certain chemicals, such as pesticides and herbicides, may increase the risk.
  • Genetic Factors: A family history of lymphoma can also play a role.
