What causes varicose veins?

Varicose veins occur when veins become enlarged, twisted, and overfilled with blood. This is often due to weakened or damaged vein valves, which allow blood to pool and increase pressure in the veins. Contributing factors include age, genetics, prolonged standing, obesity, and pregnancy. Varicose veins are most common in the legs because of the extra pressure needed to return blood to the heart from the lower body.
