Who Is at Risk for a Stroke?

Factors that increase the risk of stroke include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Heart diseases (like atrial fibrillation)
  • Smoking
  • Personal or family history of stroke or TIA
  • Older age
  • Being African American

Other risk factors include alcohol and drug use, lack of physical activity, high cholesterol, unhealthy diet, and obesity.
