Risk factors include:
- Being 45 or older
- Family history of diabetes
- Ethnicity (African American, Hispanic, Native American, Asian, etc.)
- Insulin resistance or prediabetes
- High blood pressure, heart disease, or high cholesterol
- Being overweight or having obesity
- Having a baby who weighed more than 9 pounds
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
- Depression
- Sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and stress
