Who Is at Risk for Type 2 Diabetes?

Risk factors include:

  • Being 45 or older
  • Family history of diabetes
  • Ethnicity (African American, Hispanic, Native American, Asian, etc.)
  • Insulin resistance or prediabetes
  • High blood pressure, heart disease, or high cholesterol
  • Being overweight or having obesity
  • Having a baby who weighed more than 9 pounds
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Depression
  • Sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and stress
